The Chancellor George Osborne published the 2010 Budget Report on 22 June 2010. It contains a number of measures that will have an impact on families with children.

These measures include:

  • Health in pregnancy grant to be abolished from April 2011.
  • Lone parents will be expected to look for work when their youngest child goes to school.
  • Tax credits will be reduced for families earning over £40,000 next year.
  • The child element of the child tax credit will increase by £150 above indexation next year.
  • From January 4 2011, the main rate of VAT will rise from 17.5% to 20%. Current zero-rated items like children's clothes will remain exempt.
  • New maximum limit of £400 a week will be applied to Housing Benefit
  • The government will introduce a medical assessment for Disability Living Allowance from 2013 for new and existing claimants
