Childcare – a strategic approach, 12/08/10 [W]

The Deputy Minister for Children has presented a paper to the Cabinet which asks them to agree that childcare should be a strategic priority for the Welsh Assembly Government.

The paper shares the findings of a review of Local Authorities childcare sufficiency assessments. This review identified a number of common themes across Authorities:

There appears to be little evidence of travel to work areas being thoroughly understood. This is critical if the geographical spread of childcare is to support employment and training.
There appears to be little evidence of neighbouring authorities consulting with each other, which would also highlight travel to work catchment issues and public transport deficiencies.
Although sustainability of childcare came up as an issue several times, links to business support mechanisms were generally not mentioned.
Significant gaps were reported for emergency, out of school and holiday childcare provision.
It appears that very little support has been identified for the needs of disabled children or those requiring additional needs.
