ABCD Cymru works with black and minority ethnic children and young people with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses to improve their access to services.

Aims:

  • To support and empower disabled children, young people and families to take up services.
  • To work with service providers and policy makers to raise awareness and be more responsive to the need of disabled children, young people and their families on an all-Wales basis.
  • To provide opportunities for mutual support for parent carers and also for disabled young people.
  • To initiate develop, maintain and facilitate parent support groups.
  • To undertake direct casework with children, young people and their families, in relation to social care, health and education.
  • To provide a consultation mechanism for statutory and voluntary agencies.
  • To represent BME disabled communities at strategic level, locally and nationally.
  • To undertake research where appropriate.
  • To provide an information resource for disabled children, young people and their families.
  • To arrange and facilitate supported referrals to agencies.
  • To provide access to supported and culturally appropriate play and leisure activities for disabled children.
  • To work with young people to access leisure, employment, education and training opportunities.
  • To provide relevant training and training resources for statutory, voluntary, health and other relevant organisations.
  • To provide demographic information for policy makers on ethnicity, language and conditions.
  • To provide consultancy and advice to social work teams and under take joint visits.
  • Offer consultancy to statutory, voluntary, health and other organisations, on a Wales-wide basis, on engaging with BME disabled children, young people and their carers.
